| Harman Hay [link] specialises in taking the best of historical and vintage style and using that inspiration to make wonderful, beautiful, individual clothes that are either period accurate or adapted for modern comfort and wearability. We pride ourselves on outstanding personal service and fabric art second to none. A background as a mathematician has allowed Cathy to ask awkward questions and find new, precise ways of doing things as she became fascinated with the history of clothes. The unique Harman Hay method of fitting allows the clothes to be made at great distances, meaning that Harman Hay can now accept clients for bespoke, uniquely fitted clothing (including corsetry) from anywhere in the world, without the need to visit for fittings. Cathy began sewing at the age of fourteen and became professional ten years later, in 1996. She completed work for private clients in Britain and then spent a considerable period doing so in New England, including theatrical work in New York, before returning to the UK in 2003. She now continues her work in the central city of Nottingham, a short walk from Lord Byron's tomb and a somewhat longer country walk from his former home, Newstead Abbey. She is lucky to enjoy the vast inspiration of her home country, particularly the costume collections of the Victoria and Albert and Bath museums and the beautiful craftsmanship on show at historic houses such as Chatsworth and those owned by the National Trust, of which she is a member. Cathy lives in Nottingham with partner Demi and feline daughters Fred and Jossie. |
